Introducing the FinOptimal MCP: Working through your continuous close, alongside an AI agent

AI tooling is bringing a lot of powerful automation to an accountant’s daily workload. They use it to fix a spreadsheet formula, build a visual data representation, or think through how to book something unusual. Then they go back to QBO to do the actual work, because the assistant can't see the books.

The FinOptimal MCP connects the two. Once it's set up, the AI tool you already use can look at your QuickBooks data, run your FinOptimal workflows, and make changes for you after you approve them.

What it is

An MCP is a standard way to plug outside software into an AI tool. Our MCP connects FinOptimal to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other AI agents that support it.

It gives the agent access to the full FinOptimal toolset. That includes your QBO data, your Booker and Wrangler workflows, and the bank feed data Reconciler works from. The assistant can read, create, update, and delete. You ask in plain language, and it does the work in FinOptimal and QBO.

Who it's for

The FinOptimal MCP is a new automation unlock for accountants who already spend part of their day in an AI agent and want to automate month-end close or cleanup work. That includes CAS firms working across a roster of clients, or in-house finance teams closing their own books.

If you'd rather stay in FinOptimal, you don't need the MCP. The same data is available in FinOptimal’s Chat in the app. I cover how to choose between them below.

How to use it

You talk to it the way you'd talk to a staff accountant. The work falls into three groups.

Find things. Ask "How many unreconciled transactions do I have in this client right now?" and it returns the bank feed transactions that aren't in QBO yet. That's the same list Reconciler shows. You can also filter in ways QBO can't, like pulling transactions by the date they were created, or drill in with just a plain language follow up question. If the books are off by a small amount, give it the amount and it looks for the transaction, or the combination of transactions, that explains it.

Book and change things. Ask it to create a journal entry, an invoice, or a batch of invoices from a spreadsheet you paste in. It stages the entry and shows it to you first. Nothing books until you approve it. Once it's booked, you get a direct link to the entry in QBO.

Work with Booker and Wrangler. Run an existing Booker workflow, build a new Booker or Wrangler workflow, or change one by describing what's wrong. "The query doesn't show me exactly what I want. Can you tweak it?" is a fine instruction.

Follow-ups work the way you'd expect. If a table is missing something, ask it to add a column. If the agent finds an error, ask it to fix.

Why you should care

Running a continuous close means checking on the books often and fixing small problems before they pile up at month end. Most of that work is identifying open questions to ask, and digging for the answer. In QBO, a lookup can mean running a report, exporting it, and filtering it by hand. With the MCP, it's a question in a window you probably already have open.

Answers come back fast. FinOptimal caches your QBO data, so queries don't wait on live calls to Intuit's API.

You can fix what you find in the same conversation. The MCP reads and writes. It can create, update, and delete entries.

It works with the automations you already have. The MCP reaches Booker, Wrangler, and Reconciler, so it can run and adjust the workflows you've set up.

It connects FinOptimal to your other tools. Your AI assistant has its own connectors. Through the MCP it can pull FinOptimal data, chart it, put it in a doc, or send a summary to a teammate in Slack. We won't integrate with every tool a firm uses. This lets your assistant handle that part.

A quick note on safety. I know how accountants feel about software that can write to the books, because I feel the same way. But everything done via the MCP is staged first, and nothing books until you approve. If you ask for something destructive, like deleting all your transactions, it pushes back and asks before doing anything. Rate limits are in place. If an entry gets deleted, the MCP can recreate it, which QBO can't do.

It isn't foolproof. If you insist on something, it will do it, the same as QBO or any other tool with write access to your books.

How to get started

To get started with the FinOptimal MCP, select your username in the top right corner of FinOptimal, and select “AI Connectors.” That will have the setup instructions you need, depending on your tool of choice. Once you’ve configured the connection, you’ll be able to call on FinOptimal data in any AI session going forward.
